Da Vinci Code prequel delay
The follow-up to the Da Vinci Code is one of the first films to be hit by the writers strike.
Angels & Demons is the prequel to the Da Vinci Code and has Tom Hanks reprising his role as dull as a doorknob Professor Robert Langdon. Also, back in the driving seat, is director Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.
But as a member of the Writer’s Guild of America Goldsman can’t work while a strike action is in effect. Feeling that the screenplay is not ready Columbia has pushed the release date back from Christmas 2008 to May 2009.
The WGA Strike has now lasted three weeks with negotiations due to begin on November 26. The WGA are looking to receive a fair cut of profits from new media, such as the internet, which up until this point they haven’t.
Columbia Pictures don’t expect any of their other 2008 releases to be pushed back.
The Da Vinci Code took $753m at the worldwide box office, despite utterly forgettable.
An except from Colombia Pictures’ press release is after the jump.
Source: Strike hits Da Vinci Code prequel [ BBC ]“With the strike nearing its third week, Columbia Pictures has postponed production of ‘Angels & Demons’.
“While the film-makers and the studio feel the screenplay is very strong, we do not believe it is the fully realised production draft required of this ambitious project.
“At this time, there is no new start date, but we are setting a release date of 15 May 2009.”
